Make a Healthy Steak BBQ

Summer BBQ cookouts are fun, but can be super unhealthy with all the burgers and hot dogs. Believe it or not, there are healthy alternatives when it comes to BBQs and they are just as delicious. You can still have fun this grilling season by cooking grilled flank steak or steak fajita skewers.

Grilled Flank Steak

Flank steak is a lean steak and very flavorful, especially when grilled to mouthwatering perfection. It is also known for its health benefits, which are boosting your intake of iron and vitamin 12.

For this recipe you will need two pounds of flank along with the following ingredients to make the marinade.

  • one-third cup of olive oil
  • one-third cup of soy sauce
  • one-quarter cup of honey
  • 2 tablespoons of red wine vinegar
  • one-half teaspoon of ground black pepper
  • 2 garlic cloves

Mix all marinade ingredients in a bowl and place the steak in there. Mix/marinade the steak until it is fully covered with the mixture. Let it sit for a minimum of two hours. You can also let it sit overnight.

Once the marinated steak is ready, start heating up your grill on high and place the steak on the hottest area of your grill, grilling each side for two minutes. Once finished, place the steak on the cooler side and cook for a few more minutes depending on how you like it.

Enjoy your steak with healthy sides, such as mustard potato salad, summer relish, mushrooms or chimichurri.

Steak Fajita Skewers

Steak fajita skewers are as good as they look and they can be a great healthy alternative when summer grilling. For this one you will need:

  • 1 pound of fresh sirloin steak
  • 1 bunch of scallions
  • Tortillas
  • 4 large bell peppers
  • 8 soaked skewers
  • Extra-virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper

Begin by cutting the steak into squares. Then cut the scallions into thirds. Cut the tortillas and bell peppers into large pieces. You can start putting all of it on the eight individual skewers while the grill is being heated. Grill the skewers and make sure to add some olive oil and salt and pepper. In about 6 to 7 minutes your skewers will be ready to enjoy.
